DILAPIDATED SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE INHIBITS LOCAL EDUCATION
AND LONG TERM ECONOMIC GROWTH

Many Cabarrus County taxpayers took a short sighted view toward schools that were underfunded and in crisis. Steve took the lead and spoke all over the county educating citizens and informing them as to the need to pass a school bond issue.

The need was immense and the bond issue huge. Those bonds sure did need to pass. Steve Medlin stepped forward as a community activist and public speaker to lead a group of presenters working for passage of a school bond issue. Working with school board member, Grace Mynatt, Steve gave numerous presentations around Cabarrus County over the course of months leading up to the passage of bonds. He went to schools, churches, civic organizations and other groups such as Lions and Rotary. The county was in no mood to spend extra money during slow economic times. However, building up the school system is an investment in the whole county’s future. Steve assisted the citizens of Cabarrus County in learning why support of the school system was the finest investment that could be made toward the progress of the whole county

Some citizens argued that they had no stake in the quality of the public schools and therefore, were not interested in spending more money. Typically people arguing against the bonds were those whose children had already grown up and left the public school system. Steve was forceful in arguing that those whose children had aged out of the public schools were perhaps those who ought to be most interested in the public school system. The age group known as empty nesters would be the next demographic to be collecting their social security benefits. We all understand that it is the children in school today who will be earning wages and paying social security taxes in several years to support those on social security. It is to everyone’s benefit to have an educated work force entering the marketplace on a constant basis.

Other taxpayers argued that they did not want to pay more taxes to build schools that they and their adult children would never attend. Steve pointed out that all of us attended schools that were built by generations in the past. Every generation has a responsibility to build for its own present needs as well as the future needs of society. There is a generational contract that needs to be supported especially in building schools for today as well as for tomorrows use.

AND THE SCHOOL BONDS PASSED!
