In 2009, citizens of Concord had experienced a multi year drought and the City water supply was drying up.  Steve served as community activist and public speaker in favor of at State regulatory hearings. We had to get water from outside the community from the Catawba River basin and “a big ole fight broke out”.

Steve Medlin volunteered as a public speaker with local Concord citizens who actively organized support for Concord to obtain much needed water.  Steve was with concerned local citizens who traveled by bus caravan to speak at numerous state hearings in Valdese, Hickory and Charlotte to argue in favor of the interbasin transfer of water for Concord’s drought relief.

In 2009, the citizens of Concord, North Carolina had experienced a multi year drought and the city water supply was drying up.  We had to get water from outside the community in the Catawba River basin and yes, a fight did break out.  The City had applied several years before, through appropriate state statutes, for an interbasin transfer from the Catawba River basin to the City of Concord.  Concord lies in the Yadkin/Pee Dee River basin.  During all those years of application process, the City complied with every state regulation.  However,  when time came for state approval, the Catawba River Keepers and certain extremely vocal residents along the Catawba River objected and yes, we had to fight a water war for several months.

As the issue became more heated, Steve Medlin and other Concord city residents came forward to defend Concord’s right under North Carolina law to obtain water from the Catawba River.  After a great commotion and much organizing and speaking in favor of the water transfer, the water rights were granted by the state.
